Dundry, St Michael The Archangel

Major Roof Recovering Works, Internal Reordering, Services Upgrade and New Facilities Extension

Records of a church located in Dundry date back to the 13th Century. The tower is thought to be 15th Century and is a fine example of Gothic mediaeval architecture. The main body of the church and side aisles were largely rebuilt in 1861. The parish commissioned an Options Appraisal to investigate a programme of works including the major reordering, services upgrade and new facilities including integration of new W.C. and kitchenette area.

The church is Grade I listed primarily for its glorious mediaeval tower and there is a Scheduled Ancient Monument mediaeval cross located to the north west of the church tower within the grounds. Great sensitivity in exploration of design options has been applied in particular with the consideration of a new extension in terms of its placement, form, size and detailing. Proposals needed to achieve a balance of identifying the significance of the built fabric and context, and understanding and meeting the needs of the community.

The Options Appraisal assessed the project issues and constraints, analysed the buildings significance and sensitivities and contained comparative cost analysis to allow the client to explore available options for the project. Consultations were undertaken with English Heritage, the DAC and the local conservation officer. A funding strategy was identified and implemented. Once the funding was secured and the project was developed and tendered, a suitably experienced contractor was appointed to deliver and complete works on site.
